Although buoys have long been used by lobster fisherman along the entire East Coast, the wooden buoys used by the Maine lobsterman have a unique and storied past. Lobster buoys are used to mark the location of the lobsterman’s trap. Cutting or stealing a lobster buoy in Maine is considered worse than cattle rustling! Shots have been fired and boats have been mysteriously sunk over the pilfering of buoys. But, if there is one souvenir that the Maine visitor covets, it’s the lobster buoy. Today wood lobster buoys are used sparingly due to the damage they cause to boats’ propellers and the use of modern materials, such as plastic is commonplace. The wooden buoy is truly a rarity, but they are still carved by  using and ancient jig built around 1920. Just as in days gone by, our buoys are hand-painted and branded with our license number as required. The buoys may be displayed outside without fear of destroying the work of our Maine artists. Our buoys are made from northern white cedar and some cracking in the wood is natural. It only adds to the charm of the buoy.
